This letter is a personal recommendation for Joji Kodama’s lesson. The school coordinator, Joji Kodama is a very qualified English instructor. He is my personal friend. I first met Joji in Niagara Falls, Canada in 1987. He was one of the first Japanese people to apply and go to Canada on a working holiday visa. It was then he introduced me to Japan and its culture and customs. As I then knew no Japanese at all, Joji was my teacher of Japanese and my translator. I remember watching 北の国から with Joji at my home in Canada. Joji translated the entire movie to me. I was quite impressed and moved. He understood the nuances and explained them to me because he understood both Japanese and English thought.
Joji inspired me to learn Japanese. It was because of Joji that I first came to Japan in 1989. I learned of the working holiday visa program from Joji and applied. I was here for a total of one year, where I was an English teacher for the Yokohama School board of Education. I was a part of a pilot
program which taught kids English in Public primary schools. I also taught for Nissan Motor Corp. and Toray. From my experience as a teacher, I have realized that what makes a good teacher is not just language ability, but also personality to make a class interesting.
Many people in Japan now speak English, however, very few people speak English very well. Joji inspired me to learn Japanese and I'm conflict that he can inspire you to learn English likewise. And as I am now living in Japan, I have had many opportunities to meet many Japanese people and many Japanese people who speak English. But Joji is still one of the very few Japanese people I know who has enough English vocabulary to explain to me certain Japanese meanings.
It is because of this talent that Joji possesses and his fun nature that I am proud to give my recommendation to anyone who wishes to take part in Joji's English lessons.
